Types of Snowflakes Found in Nature
Did you know that snowflakes are more than 56 shapes
of snowflakes? There are simple prisms, stellar plates,
sectored plates, stellar dendrites, fern-like stellar
dendrites, hollow columns, needles, capped columns, double
plates, split plates, stars, triangular crystals, 12-sided,
bullet rosettes, radiating, and rimmed. Most of time when
we think of a snowflake, like a wintery or Christmas snowflake,
it is a stellar dendrite or radiating dendrite. Dendritic
means "tree-like", and these are plate-like
snow crystals with branches and side branches. They are
2-4 mm in diameter and can be seen by the naked eye. Next
time you're in the snow, get out a magnifying glass and
take a peak; you may be surprised at what you see!
